DTIPS has arranged for conferees to take field trips on Thursday, September 8th to local sites of interest in the Orange County area. Conferees should rank field trips options 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the registration form. The following are descriptions of the field trips available:

  1. Golden West College – Criminal Justice Training Center (CJTC) is the major police training academy in Orange County. Conferees will be able to experience a specialized police training course with equipment. Former Police Chief Ron Lowenberg, Dean of the Center, has arranged for conferees to see and learn about the latest technology in police vehicles, helicopters, and video interactive shooting ranges. There will also be a mobile command center to visit; such centers are used to manage violent large-scale police operations. Additionally, the CJTC, in collaboration with the International Students and Peace Studies, will be featuring a special video and poster presentation on international student’s perspectives on policing in the United States during the field trip.
  2. Bowers Museum is a local museum featuring exhibits on the local Chumash Indians who occupied the an area of land from Santa Barbara to San Diego, California. The local Chumash band of Indians were know as the Gabrielinos because of their tie to the San Gabriel Mission. Prior to the missions, they were cave dwellers in the lands around Newport Beach. A second exhibit features the life of Benjamin Franklin, who is known as one of the original forefathers, and statesman, of the United States. He was also known as a scientist, writer, printer, publisher and served as the United States Ambassador to France.
  3. Diversity in Practicing Religious Freedom – in this field trip conferees will visit three diverse religious facilities in the Orange County area. The Crystal Cathedral, which is known for its unique crystal structure and gracious beauty, is a Christian facility. A visit to a Muslim mosque will follow . The final stop will be to a Buddhist Temple who have promised to provide refreshments for the conferees.
  4. Rest and Relaxation – conferees who wish to have some free time to unwind, shop, visit with friends, go to the beach, or just sit back by the swimming pool may choose this option. Persons choosing this option will be on their own until 6:30 pm.

All field trips should allow conferees to return to the hotel at 5:00pm. This will give everyone enough time to attend the banquet at the University of Irvine Club House at 6:30 pm.
